Ringwood has held a Royal Charter for its Wednesday market since 1226 — nearly 800 years, and the market has run continuously ever since, making it one of the oldest working market towns in the country. The town grew up as a trading stop between the forest and the coast on the banks of the River Avon, which left it with a dense core of market-town terraces alongside the newer housing that's grown up around it.
